The 3 Tools Every MVP Needs (And How to Use Them)

You know you need to measure your MVP. You've defined your assumptions. Now you need to track real behavior, not just count signups.

Good news: You don't need an enterprise analytics stack. You need three free tools and what to track with them.

Tool 1: Mixpanel (Free: 1M events/month)

What it does: Tracks specific user actions and tells you if people actually use your product.

What to track:

  • Activation: User completed setup, created first project, used core feature

  • Retention: How many users return Day 1, Day 7, Day 30

  • Feature usage: Which features get used, which get ignored

Create a simple funnel: Signup → Activation → Return Visit. If users drop off between signup and activation, your onboarding is broken. If they don't return, you're not delivering value.

Tool 2: Hotjar (Free tier: 35 daily sessions)

What it does: Records actual user sessions so you can watch people use (or struggle with) your product.

What to watch for:

  • Rage clicks: User clicking the same thing repeatedly because it's not working

  • Confusion points: Mouse moving erratically, hovering without clicking

  • Drop-off spots: Users abandon at the same step every time

Watch 5-10 recordings this week. You'll see that "obvious" button nobody clicks. That "simple" form where everyone quits at field 3. The feature you built that users completely ignore.

Tool 3: Google Analytics 4 (Free)

What it does: Tracks where users come from and basic traffic patterns.

What to track:

  • Traffic sources: Organic, paid, social, direct

  • Landing page performance: Which pages convert visitors to signups

  • Channel quality: Which source brings users who actually activate

Connect GA4 to Mixpanel data. If Instagram brings 100 signups but only 5 activate, and organic brings 20 signups where 15 activate - you know where to focus.

Your Weekly Routine

Monday: Check Mixpanel - how many users activated? What's your Day 7 retention?

Wednesday: Watch 5 Hotjar sessions of users who dropped off. Find the friction point. Fix it.

Friday: Check GA4 - which traffic source brought the best users? Double down there.

Three tools, 30 minutes a week, better decisions.

Two Tests to Run Now

A/B Test: You have two ideas for onboarding. Manually split users (odd IDs get Version A, even get Version B). Track completion rate for each. After 100 users per version, pick the winner.

Smoke Test: Add an "Invite Team" button. When clicked, show: "We're building this. Leave your email to be notified." Track clicks. Under 5% after two weeks? Kill it. Over 20%? Build it immediately.

Do This Today

  1. Pick one tool (Mixpanel for behavior, GA4 for traffic)

  2. Integrate it (30 minutes)

  3. Define 3-5 key events that indicate success

  4. Add tracking code to those actions

  5. Set a Monday reminder to review the data

The goal isn't perfect measurement. The goal is to stop flying blind.
